08 CHURCH OF ST. ELIAS Vushtrri/Vucitrn

Site description Single-aisled barrel-vaulted earlier church with pronaos. An exonarthex was later added enclosing the church. The church was erected in 1834 over remains of an older church (XVI- XVIIc.). Rich wall paintings. Parish house and graveyard.
2004-Damage Assessment st.sava
  • Roof destroyed by fire, windows removed. A few structural cracks.
  • Interior looted, vandalized and burnt down, burnt emporia floor and beams, unstable columns. Wall paintings affected by fire.
  • Parish and guest houses burnt down, cemetery desecrated
2005-Protective Interventions st.sava
  • Cleaning of the site and the church.
  • Protective hoardings around the site.
  • Building of a protective temporary roof.
  • Protection of doors and windows.
2006-RECONSTRUCTION WORKS st.sava
  • Dismantling of the provisional protective roof.
  • Excavation around the church.
  • Repair or substitution of plasters.
  • New exonarthex roof structure and tiles.
  • Drainage system.
  • Stone roof covering to the church.
  • New joinery.
  • New floor.
  • Electrical installation.
2007-RECONSTRUCTION WORKS st.sava
  • Repairs to the roof.
  • Reconstruction of the parish house.
2008-RECONSTRUCTION WORKS
  • Continuation of works from 2007.
2009-FURTHER INTERVENTIONS PROGRAMMED
  • Cemetery repairs.
  • Reconstruction of the baptistery.
  • Landscaping and perimeter wall.
  • Wall paintings restoration.
