01 CHURCH OF THE HOLY VIRGIN LJEVIŠKA. Prizren

Site description
Byzantine style, five domes, cross-in-square church. Attached belfry over exonarthex. Rich decorative wall paintings. Built in the XIV century over the remains of a previous XI c. Basilica.
Cultural historic monument, protected by law. Recently included in UNESCO world heritage list.

2004-Damage Assessment
|
- The church was severely affected by fire in 2004. Damaged openings, belfry structure endangered due to the effects of fire, especially in the area of the biforium. Interior burnt and vandalized. Wall paintings covered in soot. Part of the fresco of the Virgin of Eleousa destroyed by hammering.
- Note: A large part of the lead roof cover was stolen in 2005.

2005-Protective Interventions
|
- General clearance of the site,
- New fence and gates. Replacement or repair of damaged doors, lintels, grills and windows.
- Replacement of stone pillar and capital of the biforium.
- New timber construction covered with lead to the first level of the belfry.
- Replacement of burnt beams of the belfry. Stabilization of the bell.
- Temporary plastic sheet roof covering installed to roof areas without lead cover.

2006-Reconstruction works
|
- Replacement of the lead roof cover over the lateral aisles, the altar area and the belfry.
- Stone and brick work consolidation.
- Repairs to the exonarthex damaged surfaces.
- Repair of the belfry’s iron railings and reconstruction of the platform
- Repair of the upper gallery and, render and floors of the chapel
- Replacement of burnt joinery and lintels
- Reconstruction of the narthex timber gallery and staircase
- Glazing of windows.

2007-Reconstruction works
|
- Full reconstruction of the auxiliary services building.
- Third phase of lead roof replacement.

2008-Reconstruction works
|
- Continuation of works from 2007.

2009-Further interventions programmed

- Reconstruction of the priest’s house.
- Wall paintings conservation programme.
